Studies on the Pre - Sprouting Cultivation of Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita Thunb .)

Abstract
To find the effect of pre-sprouting cultivation on Chinese yam, the slicing periods, sprout length, and planting date were investigated in 1989. The results are summarized as follows. In the pre-sprouting cultivation, the days for sprouting, which was taken 25 - 30 days at the pre-wintering slicing, was shortened by 5 days, comparing at the postwintering slicing. According to the slicing section of Chinese yam, the days required for sprouting was fastened by the following orders; proximal, middle, and distal. When yam was cultivated after pre-sprouting, the yield was increased about 36% at 0.5§¯, 47% at 1§¯ and 55% at 3§¯, respectively compared to the non pre-sprouting cultivation, which owed to the facts that the days of emergence was enhanced by 27¡39 days and the rate of emergence was increased about 10%. But, as 3cm plot was lower in high quality rate than 1§¯ plot, the proper sprouting length in the cultivation of Chinese yam was 1§¯.
